HOW TO CONFIGURE A WIRELESS ROUTER

That wireless router that is in your living room is essentially the core of your entire home network. Almost all your devices are linked to it and your modem. That wireless router that is in your living room is essentially the core of your entire home network. Almost all your devices are linked to it and your modem to connect to the Internet.

WHAT IS A ROUTER?

First of all we will learn the basics: what is a router? The router is the device that allows connectivity by receiving and emitting signals on the network. That is why it is also known as ‘router’. The router receives a packet of information, processes it and sends it back via a specific path (or route), depending on the configuration it has.

AND WHAT IS A MODEM?

Some confuse both devices since they are practically the same. The truth is that at present we hardly see modems, these are already included in the routers. A modem allows the connection of a single device to the network, while the router ensures that several devices can connect, either via Ethernet (cable) or wireless (Wi-Fi) connection.

To configure a wireless router, four main steps must be followed:

HOW TO SET UP A WIRELESS ROUTER

GET THE RIGHT HARDWARE

You will need the following hardware to configure a wireless network and connect it to the Internet:
  • A wireless router
  • A computer that has a wire
  • d network adapter. (The wired network adapter is used only during setup and can be the same equipment as the wireless network adapter.)
  • A network cable (Ethernet).

CONFIGURE THE ROUTER

If the router has the Windows logo or the phrase “Windows compatible”, you can automatically configure it with the latest version of Windows Connect Now (WCN) in Windows 8, Windows RT, Windows 7 or Windows Vista Service Pack 2.
To automatically configure a router
➡️ Unpack the router and connect it to a power source. Since you are using WCN, you do not need to physically connect the router to the computer.
➡️ Press or click to connect to a network.
➡️ Press or click on the router’s default network, which you can identify by the name of the manufacturer.
➡️ Press or click on the network you want to connect to, press or click Connect, and then follow the instructions on the screen.

NOTE

WCN configures the router with security enabled. You can change the security settings later.
If WCN is not available, most routers include a CD to help configure the wireless network. Review the information provided with the router.
If WCN is not available and you did not receive an installation CD, you can configure the router manually.

TO MANUALLY CONFIGURE A ROUTER

  • Unpack the router and connect it to a power source.
  • Connect one end of the network cable to the wired network adapter of the computer and the other end to a LAN port of the wireless router (any port that is not labeled “Internet”, “WAN” or “top link”).
Ports located on the back of a router
  • Open the web browser and enter the address of the router’s configuration web page. For most routers, the address of the configuration web page is http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.1.1.
On the configuration page, log in with the username and password included in the router documentation. If you cannot find your username and password and you have an Internet connection on another computer, you can search the router manufacturer’s website on the Internet for more information.
  • To configure the following values, see the information provided with the router.
    • Choose a name for the wireless network.
    • Select the type of encryption (WPA, WPA2 or WEP) that you want to use for security reasons and enable it.
It is recommended to use WPA2. WEP is not recommended. WPA and WPA2 are the safest options. If you try WPA or WPA2 and they don’t work, it is recommended that you upgrade the network adapter to one that is compatible with WPA or WPA2.
  • Choose a security key or a passphrase to connect to the wireless network.
  • Change the default administrative password of the router to prevent other people from connecting to the network.

CONNECT THE ROUTER TO THE INTERNET

Connecting your router to the Internet grants Internet connection to all people in your network.
Depending on the devices you have, these steps may vary.

TO CONNECT A DEVICE (A MODEM AND COMBINED ROUTER)

Combined modem and router device connected
  • Connect the power cord of the device to a power outlet.
  • Connect one end of the telephone cable to the wide-area network (WAN) port of the device and then connect the other end to the wall jack. (ADSL users: ADSL filters should not be used on the telephone line).
  • Connect one end of the network cable to the LAN port of the device, and then connect the other end to the network port of the computer. (If you are going to make a wireless connection, skip this step).
  • Start (or restart) the computer.

TO CONNECT TWO DEVICES (A MODEM AND A SEPARATE ROUTER)

Modem and router connected
  • Connect the modem power cable to a power outlet.
  • Connect one end of the telephone cable to the modem and the other end to the wall jack. (ADSL users: ADSL filters should not be used on the telephone line).
  • Connect one end of the network cable to the modem and the other end to the router’s wide area network (WAN) port.
  • Connect the router to an outlet.
  • Connect one end of the cable to the router’s LAN port and connect the other end to the network port of the computer that you want to connect to the Internet. (If you are going to make a wireless connection, skip this step).
  • Start (or restart) the computer.

CONNECTION OF EQUIPMENT TO THE NETWORK

You can keep the initial equipment connected to the router permanently through a wired connection or switch to a wireless connection. Do the following to connect other computers to the network.

TO CONNECT OTHER EQUIPMENT TO THE NETWORK

  1. Log in to the computer you want to connect to the network.
  2. Press or click to connect to a network.
  3. Choose the wireless network from the list that appears, and then press or click Connect. (Whenever possible, you should connect to a wireless network with security enabled. If you connect to a network that is not secure, a person with the right tools can see everything you do, including the websites you visit, the documents you work on and the usernames and passwords you use.)
  4. Perform one of the following actions:
  • If the router supports Windows Connect Now (WCN) or Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS), and there is a command button on the router, press the button and wait a few seconds while the router automatically adds the computer to the network. In this case, it is not necessary to enter a security key or passphrase.
  • If prompted, type the security key or password, and then press or click Ok.
